Sandwich Glass bear head Pomade jar bottle X Bazin Philadelphia 1860s pressed

Description

For your consideration:  a Sandwich Glass Co., (Sandwich, Cape Cod, Mass.), pressed flint glass bear head.  This is the head/lid for an X. Bazin's perfumery Pomade jar / bottle.  Xavier Bazin took over Eugene Roussel's business sometime just before 1850.  This item was likely sold out of the #17 So. 5th St. shop.  It was dug in late 1850's / early '60's context in Philadelphia last year.  It is in fantastic condition with only a minor flake missing from the back of the bear's left ear.  Very clean with no chips, sickness, or scratching at all otherwise.  Full of tiny micro-bubbles.  It appears to be a three part mold.  According to some research, there are at least four colors and two sizes Sandwich offered this product in.  This is undoubtedly from the smaller size jar, based on visual diagnostics from web image references.  The colors we were able to find are zinc white (milk glass), a "black glass" which appears to be a dark violet, a so-called "rare" milk oxide light blue (opaque), and a possible uranium/vaseline-type citron green.  Sandwich and Corning both have collections of these in both sizes and partial and complete pair combinations of these colors.  Sandwich refers to a "starch blue" coloration which we assume to be the rare opaque light blue.  Our item for offer is a seemingly unknown transparent blue (turquoise).  It is unclear which blue is meant to be designated "starch blue".  Perhaps this color is rarer yet?  The bear bodies were embossed "X. Bazin / Philadelphia" on the base.  Potentially, Sandwich offered the mold to other markets as some bodies do not bear the X. Bazin embossing.  The complete pair (head/lid and body/vessel) would have measured:  9.4 cm. in overall height.  6.3 cm. w/out the head.  The head itself measures:  1 7/16" high x approx. 1 9/16" wide.  Orifice ID: 15/16", OD: 1 3/16".  This auction is for the head / lid only seen in images #1 - #11.  It is an incomplete set.  Image #11 shows a close up of the ear flake damage.  Image #12 shows reference images of web captures illustrating various colors, sizes, and embossing.  It is for reference only; none of these items are for offer.  Please message with any questions at all.
