Description
NORTHWOOD DAFFODILS PRIMROSE GLASS BLOWN WHITE OPALESCENT FINGER OIL LAMP EAPGA beautiful piece of hand-made early American pattern glass (EAPG) in the form of a lovely oil or kerosene finger lamp.
I believe the maker to be Northwood Glass and I have always referred to this pattern as “Daffodils” but have seen recently that others call this pattern “Primrose”.
The floral opalescent pattern in this lamp certainly looks the same to me as other blown Northwood Daffodils pieces I own.
A lamp with a font having a very similar floral opalescent pattern is pictured on page 268 in the book
Oil Lamps: The Kerosene Era in North America
by Catherine M. V. Thuro and called “Primrose”.
The book
Harry Northwood The Wheeling Years 1901-1925
by
William Heacock, James Measell and Berry Wiggans
briefly mentions the “Primrose” pattern in a discussion about Northwood oil lamps on page 159 and points to the above-mentioned picture in the Thuro book.
Mr. Heacock also writes in his book
Encyclopedia of Victorian Colored Pattern Glass Book II Opalescent Glass from A to Z
on page 43 that an oil lamp was made in the “Daffodil” pattern.
The font is made in a crystal or clear colored glass with a white or opal opalescent floral pattern decorating the glass.
It has a hand applied clear glass handle and a metal collar with threads to hold a burner.
I see no identifying markings on the lamp or the collar.
This has been in my personal collection since the year 2000.
The lamp has a nice strike of opalescence and is gorgeous as you can see from the photos!
I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.

Age and Condition
This piece dates to circa 1900.
It is in excellent original condition.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item.
There is some extremely minor cloudiness to the inside of the font.
There is a tiny bit of roughness to the curlicue at the bottom of the applied handle.
I studied this with a loupe and believe it is a minor factory flaw from the making of the glass rather than any form of damage.
There is tarnish to the metal collar and there is a split in the metal; see the last photo for a close-up of this.
I will also mention that the material holding the collar to the glass (probably Plaster of Paris) has overflowed on the inside of the neck in one area but this is not visible unless you look directly down the opening in the collar.
Otherwise, there are no other chips, flea bites, cracks, hairlines or repairs that I can see.
There are also signs of wear to the bottom of the foot that would be consistent with piece of glass of this age.
Please keep in mind these photos can be blown up at least 8X-10X times normal, so anything you see will look 8X-10X times larger in the photos than it really is.
Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.
It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
Approximate Dimensions
It is about 4” (10.2 cm) in diameter at the font and about 5.25” (13.3 cm) across the handle direction and sit about 3.25” (8.3 cm) off the table.
Approximate Weight
About 11 ounces (313 grams).
