one (1) F. E. OLDS & SON, AMBASSADOR B-FLAT TRUMPET, FULLERTON, CALIFORNIA, ML BORE, in majority
RAW BRASS.
The Olds trumpet enthusiast will recognize the historic value and the efficacy of the yellow brass of this early Fullerton, California, trumpet, serial #365859.
I purchased this Olds Ambassador several years ago with intent to modify it but I have decided to go in a different direction. The Ambassador has never left my non-smoking residence.
The Olds Ambassador is identified by:
(1) its B-flat nominal .460 Medium Large Bore. The trumpet is substantial and is not the lightweight design that is in vogue today.
(2) the majority raw brass finish to the body and bell with nickel plated trim on the slide tubings.
(3) the standard model yellow brass leadpipe.
(4) its Monel valves
with brass valve guides
. The valve barrels are stamped with the corresponding serial number that is stamped on the valve casing.
(5) its yellow brass inside and outside tuning slide tubes.
(6) its D-squared yellow brass main tuning slide.
(7) its
3rd valve slide water key for water removal (the water cork needs replacement).
(8) its main tuning slide water key for water removal (the water cork needs replacement).
This Olds Ambassador is not a closet queen and has definitely been a "working trumpet". The raw brass finish and the body and nickel trim
are in
GOOD CONDITION
. As this is an older model, there are dents, ripples, and scratches in the raw brass finish of the bell and the body (Photos #1 & #2). The bell flare and the bell rim do not have any denting and both are in very good condition (Photos #3 & #4). The leadpipe has a dent (Photo #2).
Nevertheless, considering the age of the Olds Ambassador, it is in good condition and the imperfections do not effect its efficiency and productivity:
The valves are in good condition. There is evidence of incipient plating wear on all the valves (Photos #5 & #6). All of the valves function smoothly and work best with Hetman Classic Piston Lubricant #3 valve oil.
The brace next to the 3rd valve casing is loose and need to be re-soldered (Photo #10).
The leadpipe is in fair condition. I cleaned the leadpipe several times but imperfections can be seen in the inside (Photo #7). It is likely a sonic or chemical cleaning will remove some of the imperfections. I will leave the extra cleaning to the potential buyer.
There is scratching and abrasions to the finish of the length of the leadpipe receiver, leadpipe, and the nickel plated upper and lower main tuning slide receivers (Photos #2 & #12).
The main tuning slide is in good condition and it slides smoothly. The raw brass upper and lower legs are smooth and clean (Photos #2, #7, & #8).
There are several finger nail sized indentations in the brass ferule leading to the third valve casing (Photos #1).
The 1
st
valve slide moves smoothly. There is no thumb hook as befits the era of the instrument. There is finger nail sized indentation on the slide.
There is are several indentations on the crook of the 2nd valve slide.
The 3rd valve slide slides smoothly. There is a small dent on the crook of the slide.
There are several indentations on the bell crook. There is denting on the bottom of the bell pipe leading into the bell ferule. Most of the minor denting and "rippling" of the bell tubing is at the area across from the leadpipe receiver brace to the area across from the pinky finger ring (Photo #1, #9, & #12). The bell flare is in very good condition (Photos #3).
Prior to this listing,
I gave the trumpet a bath two times in Polmolive Oxy soap and water
. I greased all the threads and slides and re-oiled the valves with Hetman Classic Piston Lubricant #3 valve oil. I then put a modicum amount of Hetman valve oil into the leadpipe and blew the oil through the trumpet. Finally, I hand polished the trumpet with a brass rouge polishing cloth.
